****Van H. Treat Artist Bio:

Van H. Treat was born in San Francisco in 1941. He attended California College of Arts and Crafts and also studied at the prestigious Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara. He was only one of five, in his class of 28 students, to graduate with a B.F.A. He spent the next 17 years as a professional, in the areas of research and industrial photography. His watercolor artistry began as a hobby around 1976, then became his full-time passion by 1985. The strong art community and the desire to operate his own gallery is what attracted him to move to Gatlinburg with his wife Fannie.

Van paints almost strictly from his own photographs using the dry brush watercolor technique. Unlike traditional watercolor, the dry brush technique requires maximum concentration as there is no room for accidents. Each piece is skillfully planned out ahead of time with a detailed drawing rendered first. From there, it is transferred to watercolor board. It’s a slow and tedious medium, and he does a lot of glazing for rocks and weathered wood and proceeds to “lift off” the color to achieve the realistic texture. It is not uncommon for him to even use the wrinkles in his hands to create texture in rocks and tree trunks.

His works have been compared to such greats as Andrew Wyeth and Eric Sloan. It is said Van H. Treat “…is an artist who invites you to walk through his woods, meander up long deserted pathways, pull up a rock, and sit beside a running stream. There is no illusion here. His places are real…very real”.

Watkins. College of Art

Watkins College of Art Online Auction - This Auction Ended January 20, 2021

Our first online auction of 2021 includes more than 300 unique and original pieces from the former Watkins College of Art collection. There are over 150 artists represented in this auction.

Most of the artwork is original and one-of-a-kind. Watkins merged with Belmont University in 2020, bringing financial stability and expanded opportunities to Watkins’ students. There has never been a better opportunity to participate in, and buy artwork from an auction with such an important history.

Watkins was founded as the Watkins Institute in 1885 by Samuel Watkins, a self-educated Nashville businessman. The school became nationally accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) in 1996.

The sale of this remaining artwork from the Watkins’ property will be used exclusively to support a scholarship endowment for students in the new Watkins College of Art at Belmont. This sale will both aid in preserving the Watkins legacy while giving future art students greater access to a premier education.

All items will be sold with no reserves to the highest bidder, regardless of price! All payments in this auction must be made via credit card ONLY or wire transfer. There is a 15% Buyer's Premium in effect for this auction.
